Steve Davis gets new nickname from Hazel Irvine after DJ Thundermuscle revelation

Steve Davis is genuinely interesting, according to telly snooker host Hazel Irvine.

The six-times world champion was ironically dubbed ‘Interesting’ by Spitting Image during the 1980s because he was supposedly so boring.

But the former No.1 player-turned-DJ and pundit is actually a “fascinating guy”, says his BBC colleague Hazel. She told the Snookered podcast: “Particularly since he told us he was known as DJ Thundermuscle, which was quite extraordinary.

“But frankly I would rule nothing in or out where Steve is concerned. He’s a genuinely very…I’m gonna say it…interesting person. And not in the cliched sense. He genuinely is. I mean, Steve has had a massive crush on soul music all his life.

“I don’t know how many records he’s had in his life - I don’t know whether he still has them - but he was a great collector of vinyl.
“And then his interest in broadcasting… he does a radio show on Radio Essex, I think it is.”

Hazel, who has presented the BBC's World Championship coverage since 2002, continued: “Then he hooked up with his partner in crime in terms of the music scene, and the next thing we know is he’s saying ‘Yeah, I’m playing Glastonbury this summer’. We went ‘What?’ “He’s a fascinating guy.”

Davis, who won six world titles from 1981 to 1989, was a member of snooker's famous Matchroom Mob, whose hit single "Snooker Loopy" peaked at no.6 in the UK charts in 1986.

He has been DJing for a number of years and in 2021 revealed he prefers his musical exploits to his half dozen world titles. "What you can judge is how much thrill it’s giving you and how proud you are. And in that respect I’m more proud of what’s happened recently, maybe because it’s fresher," he said.

“Winning snooker events became the norm. But this is all so unexpected, beyond belief, when the snooker, in the end, was expected.

"But kudos to my bandmates for having the guts to go on the road with somebody whose only previous output was one line in Snooker Loopy."
