Prince George Wore Pants in Public For The First Time at Harry and Meghan's Wedding

Prince George, international shorts icon, had a pretty big milestone that you may have missed at the royal wedding this weekend: he wore pants.

As a page boy in the wedding, the 4-year-old prince went for a more formal look wearing a miniature version of the Blues and Royals coat that his uncle Prince Harry and father Prince William wore on the same day. The black pants, which were custom-made by Savile Row tailors Dege & Skinner, featured a red stripe down the leg.

The little prince, who stole the show as he proceeded to talk during his entire walk down the aisle, topped off his new pants with a black braided coat.

While this may not seem like that groundbreaking of outfit choices, let's remember that Prince George has rocked a pair of shorts for every one of his public appearances—no matter what time of year. He once even wore a pair of shorts to church on a chilly Christmas day—with an overcoat and his signature high socks.

George even wore a pair of shorts for his last gig as a page boy in his aunt Pippa Middleton's wedding (though he did add a pair of white tights):

But let's be honest, he does completely own the look:

So why exactly does Prince George always wear shorts? Aside from the fact that he's basically the official authority on all things shorts (and this is his signature ~LEWK~), there's actually a tradition among the British upper class, aristocracy, and royals to dress young boys in shorts. In fact, it's reportedly considered "suburban" to dress boys in long pants.

According to etiquette expert William Hanson, "It's a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts. Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England. Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban."

Well there you have it peasants, enjoy your pants.
