"Greyhounds have been bred to run and chase prey," says Shauna. Their long faces –and long noses – contribute to their streamlined attributes. However, Shauna highlights that the breed's athletic, slim build can make them more prone to injury, particularly to their legs.

These large sighthounds are popular pets for a reason: "Greyhounds are a gentle, sensitive breed that usually form very close bonds with their owners."

They may be small, but Dachshunds' keen noses make them effective hunters. "Dachshunds originated in Germany where they were bred to hunt rabbits and badgers," continues Shauna.

"They thrive on scent work and exploring, but also love to curl up in a warm spot at the end of a busy day." She adds that they are clever, affectionate dogs with a lot of energy.

Airedale Terrier

Known as the "king of terriers" due to their size, Airedales were originally bred for otter and badger hunting. With their distinctive, long, square muzzle and almost teddy bear-like wiry coat, they are a much-loved breed.

They're intelligent and very active dogs, so prospective owners must be prepared to give them a lot of mental and physical stimulation.

When thinking of dogs with long noses, Berzois are an obvious choice. These large but gentle dogs are also known as 'Russian Wolfhounds' and were originally bred as sighthounds for hunting boar and wolves. "They are built for running with athletic streamlined bodies, and powerful hind legs," says Shauna.

Border Collies are another breed with longer snouts. These intelligent, graceful dogs were bred for herding and are still used as working dogs on farms.

"They make the ideal dog for very active owners who can make sure they have plenty to do all of the time, both physically and mentally, to prevent them becoming bored and unhappy."

As well as their distinctive floppy ears and long silky coats, Afghan Hounds have regal-looking long noses. They were bred for hunting small prey, such as gazelle, in the Afghan mountains and are one of the world's oldest breeds. Any owners need to make sure they groom an Afghan Hound regularly to keep their coat healthy.

Whippet

Another popular sighthound breed with a long nose, Whippets are gentle, affectionate dogs that make great family pets.

Like greyhounds, their larger relations, Whippets were bred for speed and their streamlined head and body make them fast runners. They need plenty of exercise, however, they tend to have short bursts of energy and spend a fair bit of time curled up, too.
