Christina Applegate has spoken out about life with MS — and that viral moment at the Emmys.
When Christina Applegate, best known for playing Rachel's sister in Friends and for the series Dead to Me, appeared on stage to present an award at the 2024 Emmys, the audience jumped to their feet in a show of support. Since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021, Applegate has stepped away from acting — she now uses a walking stick and has reduced mobility.
When she appeared on stage, leaning on the arm of host Anthony Anderson, she said, "I actually don't need him here. He's just cute." After a moment of emotion at the crowd's support, she also quipped, "You're totally shaming me with disability by standing up; it's fine!"
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Applegate explained that she doesn't actually remember any of that. "I actually kind of blacked out," she said. "People said, 'Oh, you were so funny,' and I'm like, 'I don't even know what I said.' Like, I don't know what I was doing. I got so freaked out I didn't even know what was happening anymore."
However, she does remember feeling the wave of support coming from the crowd. "I felt really beloved, and it was really a beautiful thing." However, she added frankly, "That audience stood up for everybody!"
During the interview, Applegate also opened up about the realities of her day-to-day life with MS. As she explained, receiving love from fans and attending events like the Emmys was a shock to the system: "I live kind of in hell," she confided. "I'm not out a lot, so this is really a little difficult just for my system."
